Delaware Water Gap is the big cut in the Mountain on left in picture above where river has cut through the mountains over millions of years. The Delaware Water Gap National Recreational Area stretches north approximately 40 miles from near East Stroudsburg, PA. The Pocono Mountains area is a beautiful destination for Pocono Mountains Vacations in Eastern Pennsylvania.
Government originally was going to use land they had acquired in the area to build a large hydroelectric power dam which would have covered several small towns in the area. Locals fought the plan for many years and finally Federal Government gave up on the dam and established the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. Beautiful well maintained National Park area with much scenic shoreline along Delaware River including scenic forest areas.
Delaware Water Gap National Park encompasses almost 70,000 acres and runs along 40 miles of the middle Delaware River. This Link goes to National Park Service Web Site on the Delaware Water Gap where there is much information on the park including park and river maps + Hiking, Canoeing, Rafting, and Camping Info.
Do one or more "Day Trips" circling around the Delaware Water Gap river area and take time to stop and see the many Scenic Overlooks of the Delaware River and the forest areas with great Fall Folage Colors - even can do some scenic Pocono Mountains Vacations hikes.

We took several "routes" around the Delaware Water Gap Recreation Area on different days. Usually packed a picnic lunch or stopped and got Subs and snacks as left.
Tip Plan ahead on food and gas -- some areas on the East - New Jersey side are a long way from any town!
One of our favorite Scenic Drive Day Trips is the road trip drive up along the Delaware River to Lackawaxen, PA to visit the Zane Grey Museum on the Delaware River - "Father of the Western Novel". Start early so you will have plenty of time to pull off and enjoy the view from the many scenic overlooks along the Delaware Water Gap Recreational Area and on north along the Scenic River. We have always stayed in a II or RCI Vacation Time share exchange or a Time share Resort Condo Rental near Shawnee-on-Delaware or Bushkill, PA when we vacationed in the Delaware Water Gap - Poconos Mountains area. This location is within driving "Day Trip range" of great Scenic attractions to the north and to the south in the East Stroudsburg, PA - Delaware Water Gap area.
