- Day Trip to Asa Packer Mansion in Jim thorpe, Pennsylvania. Huge beautiful Mansion constructed in 1861. Now a National Historic Landmark furnished with many interesting original antiques.
Asa Packer Mansion in Jim Thorpe, PA
|
Nearby Harry Packer Mansion was built as wedding present to Asa's son - and has a near "replica" at Disneyworld, Florida Haunted Mansion. It is now a Bed & Breakfast.
Asa Packer Mansion Usually open 7 days / week - check current days/times - 11am - last tour starts 4:15. This link goes to the Asa Packer Mansion Museum web site with history, pictures, Town of Jim Thorpe Info, and detailed Asa Packer Mansion tour information.
Can also visit Historic St. Mark's Episcopal Church - Dedicated 1869 - and the Railroad displays and small RR museum while you are in Jim Thorpe. -- Also an "Old Mauch Chunk HO scale model train display" with 1,100 feet of winding track if they happen to be open at the time you are there. (AAA members get discount - Ask.)
Lehigh Gorge State Park borders on town of Jim Thorpe on southern end. Park is in a gorge with several waterfalls. The drive to Jim Thorpe and the Asa Packer Mansion is a "Must See" Pennsylvania Poconos Mountain Vacations Day Trip.
- Day Trip up north to Zane Grey (1872-1939) Home & Museum
- Lackawaxen, PA
Zane Grey View of Delaware Fall Folage
|
Home of the "Father of the Western Novel" - Zane Grey was a very successful and popular writer. (I read over 20 of his great books between the ages of 10 and 13) His house is on a quiet site overlooking Delaware River where he used to sit in his chair and write looking out the window at the Delaware River and Pocono Mountains. Beautiful peaceful scenic drive up to Lackawaxen along Delaware. Start early so you will have enough time to see everything there is to see + to enjoy the scenic drive.
Historic Delaware Aqueduct and Roebling Toll Bridge are nearby, along with Minisink Battleground park. Interesting guided museum tours are available.
Tip Museum is supposed to be open 10AM-5pm -- Saturday and Sunday + some Fridays. Call 570-685-4871 during daytime hours and talk to a "Person" if you can to check currently open days and times before you make the drive up to Lackawaxen based on the answering machine message. We drove up one time on a Friday after getting the machine message they were open, and they were closed that day. (Last Tour starts at 4:30pm, but try to get there much earlier so have ample time in the small museum + to be able to enjoy the scenic drive back in daylight.)
This link goes to the National Park Service web site on the Zane Grey Museum with History and Pictures. This goes to a page with open times & dates for the Zane Grey Museum and Roebling Bridge Tollhouse + contact Info. A "Must See" Pennsylvania Pocono Mountain Vacations Day Trip and scenic drive. This Attraction and Day Trip Scenic Points of Interest will someday have it's own page here with more details and pictures.
- Bushkill Falls - 300 foot series of 8 waterfalls - Near of town of Bushkill, Pennsylvania
Largest falls, Bushkill, has a 100 foot drop and can be seen by an approximately 15 minute walk. Two mile nature trail through forest and scenic gorge to view all 8 falls and 300 foot drop. Open 7 days/week -- 9am to dusk - last admission 90 minutes before dusk. Managed by private company.
This link goes to the Bushkill Falls Web Site with History, Trail descriptions and maps, Pictures, and current Admission dates and times. The Bushkill falls and Hiking Trails are a "Must See" (Exhibits hopefully have been improved since Oct, 2003) We will have some pictures of this Pocono Mountain Vacations Scenic Attraction.
Poconos Hot Air Balloon Festival Launch
- in early morning - still a little foggy
|
- Poconos Annual Hot Air Balloon Festival in Mid October (now combined with the Lumberjack Festival into the "Timber & Balloon Festival" - See link below for this year's Festival dates.)
The Hot Air Balloon Festival is now held at the Shawnee Mountain Ski Area in Shawnee on Delaware, PA. (Info link below) We got to visit this event twice when it was still called the Poconos Hot Air Balloon Festival on our Fall Pocono Mountain Vacations. An interesting and fun event!
We "chased" the Unkle Sam Balloon being launched in the picture and after a long way around to get to a bridge over the Delaware River, were able to arrive just in time to see it float peacefully down in the landing area to east of the mountain in the background of above picture. Watching the crew "deflating" the balloon and carefully packing it up was interesting.

+ see the "Must See's" Other Site Viewers have shared. |
Tip One event not to miss at the Balloon Festival is the "Hot Air Balloon Glow" on Friday night before the big launch event on Saturday. Several tethered balloons "fire" their burners up into their inflated colorful ballons in time to music. The colorful glow of the balloons lit up after dark is beautiful. This is followed by a fireworks display. See this page for Shawnee Mountain Timber & Balloon Festival Info + ticket prices. Page has link to a printable Schedule of Events.
The Poconos Hot Air Balloon Festival (now "Timber and Balloon Festival") is a definate "Must See" if you can schedule your Pocono Mountains Fall Vacation to include the weekend of the Festival.
- Overnight Trip to Historic Gettysburg & Gettysburg Battle Site
This trip is a definate "Must See." It is about a 3 hour drive southwest down to the Site of the Gettysburg Battlefield and nearby Gettysburg National Park Visitors Center in Gettysburg, PA so recommend an overnight (or 2) at one of the motels or B & B's near the Gettysburg National Military Park. (See Gettysburg "User Rated" Motel comparison search Link below)
The Gettysburg Battle Site is very well preserved and marked.
Self-guided or guided tours are available of the Battlefield.
See our new Gettysburg Battle Overnight Trip Page (opens new window) for more Info and pictures on this "Must See" Gettysburg Attraction.
The Gettysburg Cemetery is also a "Must See, as is the nearby Eisenhower National Historic Site and Farm.
We did a return trip by way of the Pennsylvania Dutch Country and the Amish Lancaster, PA area to see some interesting Amish community and farm areas. Checked out some Amish Furniture and even a handmade Amish quilt or two. My wife is a quilter and really enjoyed the handmade quilts - (we weren't in a "buying" mode thank goodness!)
This overnight or 2-day trip should be a "Must See" in any Pocono Mountain Vacations Itinerary. Check out our new "Gettysburg Battle Attraction page for more Info and pictures.

- Overnight trip to see Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and Historic Philadelphia, Pennsylvania & US Independence Attractions.
This "Must See" should really be at least a 2 or 3 day trip. On our last Pocono Mountain Vacations trip, we started off with a 2 1/2 day stay at a B & B which was in the Philadelphia Independence Square Historic area so we could walk to everything. Then we we went north to the Delaware Water Gap area for our 7-day Pocono Mountain Vacations Time Share Condo Stay. (See Historic Philadelphia area "User Rated" Motel Comparison search Link below)
The relatively new expanded Liberty Bell Pavilion, Independence hall, Congress Hall, Independence National Historical Park, Benjamin Franklin Court and museum are just some of the great "Must See" points of interest in the Historic Independence Square area.
Tip - Don't miss the outdoor walking nightime "Lights of Liberty" show where you are guided on a walk through the historic buildings as the story of the American Revolution is told to you via radio headsets and simultaneously projected (huge) on the sides of the Historic Buildings.

There is some music by the Philadelphia Orchestra and a special sound track for kids is available. Tours start at the PECO Energy Center at 150 S. Independence Mall West. Watch for our upcoming Philadelphia Liberty Bell / Indepencence Hall Attraction Page and Pictures.

- Pocono Knob - Elev. 1,658 - on southeast edge of town of Mount Pocono. Approx 20 miles northwest of Stroudsburg, PA.
Great panorama views of "Notch" of Delaware Water Gap 25 miles away plus surrounding area. Can even see New Jersey. It is NOT well marked - watch for "Knob Road" East off of Hwy 611 in south end of town of Mt Pocono - road winds through residential area to the top. Great spot for eating a picnic lunch while you enjoy the pieceful view!
My wife, an avid "Quilter," enjoyed shopping at a couple of Quilt Stores in the area. Could take winding scenic road going or coming through Cresco and Snowhill State Forest Picnic area (also not well marked - ask) and make it a Pocono Mountain Vacations Fall Foliage day trip road tour.
- Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm - in Stroudsburg, PA
18th - 19th Century restored Pennsylvania-German farm on 60 acre site with several buildings. Crafts demonstrated - 90 minute tours available by costumed guides. Usually open Tues-Sat 10am- 5:30, Sun 1-5:30. This link goes to a Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm Web page with a few pictures, driving directions, and current Dates & Times open. Check current times since they have some special events with different schedules. Allow 2-3 hours. Kids would especially enjoy this Pocono Mountain Vacations attraction.
- Dorflinger Glass Museum - way north in White Mills, PA
Over 700 pieces of all types of crystal displayed with period antiques. White Mills is on northwest of Lackawaxen approximately 25 miles on a winding scenic drive, so could combine it with Zane Grey Day trip above - suggest do this 1st (Via scenic Hwy 6 up) due to Fri(?) - Sat - Sun noon open times of Zane Grey.
You have to enjoy cut, engraved, enameled, etc. crystal to make the additional drive and time worth it. Drive coming and going on both routes is scenic, however. Museum takes 45 min - 1 hr. Times open usually Wed-Sat - 10-4, Sun 1-4. This link goes to the Dorflinger Glass Museum Web Site with History and Tour Info + a link to some pictures of displays.
Start fairly early and check times open so be sure have enough time for leisurely drive along Delaware and many Scenic overlooks going and coming if decide to do both the same day. Could be part of an "extensive" Pocono Mountain Vacations Day Trip road tour.
