My Wife and My Best New England Fall Vacation was a couple of years ago in October when we did many colorful fall foliage viewing drives in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
We rented a Condo at the small Crown Ridge Resort near North Conway, NH. The spacious unit we were in was in a quiet wooded area with a view of a small stream, and had a whirlpool in the master bath which we enjoyed.
We had a romantic time canoing on the nearby Sako river which runs next to Mount Washington and had beautiful views. We hiked on some of the scenic mountain trails in the area and enjoyed some great dining at some of the restaurants in North Conway, NH. We found North Conway to be a good location to be close to many attractions in the White Mountains.
We recommend the beautiful Auto Drive up Mt Washington. It was a little scary at some spots on the narrow mountain road, but the views on the way up and at the top were great. It was windy up there! We hung around long enough to see the old Cog RR train arrive at the top belching smoke. Next time we think it would be fun to ride it up to the top.
We also toured the old Mt Washington Hotel which we would definitely recommend seeing.
We drove the very colorful Kancamagus Highway winding through the White Mountain National Forest twice, once at the beginning of our week stay, and a 2nd time at the end our our week driving from the opposite end. The Fall Foliage Colors had changed some on the second trip and we enjoyed it as much as the first!
This Fall Vacation was one of the most enjoyable vacations my Wife and I have ever taken. We would highly recommend the New England White Mountains area around North Conway, NH. We will go back.
